Netherlands Music Institute

The Netherlands Music Institute (NMI) is the central institution for the preservation of the musical heritage of the Netherlands. Musical heritage as collected and preserved by the NMI is made available for research, education en performance. The collections serve as a source of inspiration for musical life in the broadest sense.

Among the source materials, mostly of classical music, are countless early prints of treatises and scores (1500-1800). The archives contain thousands of music manuscripts and letters: legacies of Dutch musicians, music institutions en societies from 1850 till today. The documentation collection contains historical programmes, cuttings etc.

Frankenberger manuscript online

The so-called Frankenberger manuscript is one of the most precious items in the collection of the Netherlands Music Institute. It contains 196 organ chorale settings from the period 1650-1730, compiled and copied by the composer and organist Johann Gottfried Walther (1684-1748).

Julius Röntgen Edition

In cooperation with the NMI, the German record label CPO has a few years ago started to record nearly all the orchestral works of Julius Röntgen. This includes not only his symphonies, but also the concertos for piano, violin and cello. The fifth CD in this series has recently been released, containing Symphonies no. 8 and 15 and the 'Variationen über eine Norwegische Volksweise'. All CD's are available through the NMI webshop.
